Known as the "Garden City," Christchurch is nestled on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, enveloped by the beauty of Canterbury Plains and the beautiful Avon River. With the perfect mix of cultural, natural, and architectural attractions, there is lots to enjoy in Christchurch itself before setting off on your road trip. 

The picturesque Banks Peninsula and Akaroa is a short drive away and a great way to ease into your adventure. Further ahead, the majestic Southern Alps beckons those seeking adventure - offering skiing and snowboarding in winter or hiking and mountaineering in summer.

Hire a motorhome in Christchurch for the best way to explore 

If you arrive at Christchurch airport you can take our free shuttle service to our Christchurch branch. The shuttle runs on demand from 8.30am – 3.30pm. 

#### To get your shuttle

Call us on [0800 500 078](tel:0800500078) or [+64 9 600 0805](tel:+6496000805), and select option #1, then #2, to request your shuttle ride. 

#### Directions

To find the shuttle meeting point, go past the check in hall to the domestic end of the terminal (ground floor). Exit out of door 1 or 2 and walk straight ahead to the shuttle pick up area.

**Note:** Our friends at JUCY share their green and purple vans with us for a speedier shuttle service. So, if you see the JUCY van, hop on board for your free airport transfer service.

Airport Shuttle

Our Christchurch based Star RV team are experts when it comes to motorhomes and South Island road trips. 

They’ll be on hand to show you through your vehicle and answer any questions before you get on the road.

If you’re coming from Christchurch Airport, you can use our shuttle service to pick you up from the airport terminal.  

If you're coming from the city, you'll need to make your own way to our branch. 

**Please note:** motorhomes cannot be picked up outside our office hours – 8.30am – 4.00pm.

Picking up your vehicle

Return your motorhome during business hours (8.30am – 4pm), ensuring you give yourself at least 30 minutes before closing to drop off your vehicle.

Remember to remove all your belongings, ensure the tank is full of petrol and waste cassettes are clean and empty.

**Please note:** after-hour motorhome drop-offs are not available at our Christchurch  branch.

Christchurch, on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a vibrant city boasting a rich history and culture. Renting a motorhome in Christchurch is the perfect way to explore this captivating region. Here are our top tips for making the most out of your Christchurch motorhome adventure. 

### Christchurch and surrounding areas  

Once you have picked up your motorhome rental at Christchurch Airport, you're ready to set off on your New Zealand road trip adventure. 

Begin by exploring the lively atmosphere of Christchurch city! From the colourful street art, delicious bites down at the Riverside Markets and the punting on the Avon River, there is no shortage of activity in the town centre. 

Next, you might like to take a wander around the expansive Hagley Park and explore the serene Christchurch Botanic Gardens. For outdoor enthusiasts, Christchurch also offers excellent mountain biking trails catering to both beginners and experienced mountain bikers. 

### Waipara 

Waipara is located about 50 minutes north of Christchurch and is home to some of the best South Island wineries and beautiful scenery. Waipara offers visitors the chance to sample award-winning wines, from crisp rieslings to rich pinot noirs, amongst the rolling hills. The region is also home to the historic Weka Pass Railway, offering scenic train rides through stunning countryside. In addition to wine tasting and railway adventures, visitors can explore the region through a variety of activities such as cycling, hiking, and even hot air ballooning! 

### Hamner Springs 

Hanmer Springs is a charming alpine village, about 1 hour and 45 minutes northwest of Christchurch, known for its natural hot springs and picturesque surroundings. The village is home to a range of relaxing thermal pools, fed by natural geothermal springs, where visitors can unwind and soak in a private spa whilst enjoying the scenery. Hanmer Springs offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and horse trekking, making it an ideal destination for both adventure seekers and those seeking relaxation. 

### Kaikoura 

If you continue to head north for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, you will arrive in Kaikoura. This coastal town is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and abundant marine life. Surrounded by towering mountains and rocky beaches, Kaikoura offers a diverse range of outdoor activities, including local wildlife encounters such as whale watching and swimming with dolphins, to hiking along scenic coastal trails. The town is also known for its delicious seafood, with local restaurants serving up fresh crayfish and other ocean delicacies. 

### Lake Tekapo 

For the ultimate South Island adventure, take the 3-hour drive south to Lake Tekapo, a uniquely New Zealand setting, with its turquoise waters and soaring mountains. Lake Tekapo forms part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, offering unparalleled opportunities for stargazing, a must-do for astronomy enthusiasts. Lake Tekapo is also famous for its vibrant lupin fields, which bloom during the summer months, adding a splash of colour to the already stunning landscape. For the kids, head down to the Bumpy Pump Bike Park to while away some time on the child-friendly bike pump park. From hiking, biking, scenic drives, and relaxing by the lakeshore, visitors are spoilt for choice
