Head north to the Bay of Islands, where you can experience crystal-clear waters and historical sites, or travel south to Rotorua for its unique geothermal features and rich Māori culture.

Hire a motorhome in Auckland for the best way to explore

If you’re arriving at Auckland airport, you can use our free shuttle to transfer you to our Auckland branch.

Just call us on [0800 500 078](tel:0800500078) or [+ 64 9 600 0805](tel:+6496000805), and select option #1, then #1 again, to request your shuttle ride. 


Our shuttle runs between 8:30am and 3:30pm.

#### From the International Airport

Head out door 8 and cross the road to follow the signs for offsite shuttle pick up (approx 5min walk)

#### From the Domestic Airport

Head out door 7/8 (By Jetstar check in desk) and cross to the other side of the lanes.

**Note:** Our friends at JUCY share their green and purple vans with us for a speedier shuttle service. So, if you see the JUCY van, hop on board for your free airport transfer service.

Airport Shuttle

We know that the little 'how to' details are important to make your experience easy, and we’ll spend time with you when you pick up your motorhome to show you through the vehicle and provide you will all you need to get on the road as quickly as possible.

**Pick up is during office hours only:**

- Collect your motorhome from our Auckland branch between 8.30am and 30 minutes before closing at 4pm.

Picking up your vehicle

Return your motorhome during business hours (8.30am – 4pm), ensuring you give yourself at least 30 minutes before closing to drop off your vehicle.

Remember to remove all your belongings, ensure the tank is full of petrol and waste cassettes are clean and empty.

If you need to drop off after hours, this will need prior approval from Star RV reservations and branch teams. After hours drop-off will incur a $40 additional fee. 

You will need to fill up with the correct fuel to the same level as when you picked up the vehicle and leave a fuel receipt at the branch.

Remove all your items from the vehicle and leave the vehicle tidy. Return the key to the key drop box located outside the branch.

**Note:** You will be fully responsible for any damage to the vehicles or parking fees incurred if dropping off after hours. The damage will not get covered under any excess reduction covers.

## Where to go in Auckland  

Hiring a motorhome in Auckland is the perfect option to get the most out of your holiday in the North Island of New Zealand. Here are our tips for making the most out of your adventure. 

  
### Auckland and surrounding areas  

Once you have picked up your motorhome rental at Auckland Airport you are ready to start exploring the beauty of the Auckland region and beyond on your New Zealand road trip.  

There are so many wonderful sights to see in Auckland City, from natural wonders to food, music, art, and culture. Discover the rich history of Māori and Pacific Islander culture at Auckland War Memorial Museum. Sitting above Auckland's CBD surrounded by serene parkland, Auckland Museum houses extensive cultural, military and natural history exhibitions, as well as two Māori cultural performances a day. It's an immersive way for the whole family to explore New Zealand's stories.  

Spend a day exploring Auckland Zoo, just 11 minutes from the CBD, where you'll find the largest diversity of wildlife in Aotearoa. Encounter cheeky kea in the huge walk-through aviary, watch playful seals or spot tigers walking overhead in their newly constructed enclosure. 

Depart Auckland from any direction in your motorhome, and you will find majestic scenery, friendly locals and unique Māori and modern culture all over the North Island.  

Visit Coromandel for unbelievably beautiful beaches, or the Bay of Islands to spot dolphins up close and visit historic Russel. The Waikato region's glow worm caves are a must-do, as is the famous Hobbiton; the movie set where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot. We recommend adding Rotorua's thermal mud pools to your itinerary, and a stop in Lake Taupo to enjoy the clear waters and great fishing. 

### Shakespear Regional Park 

A dreamy introduction to New Zealand, Shakespear Regional Park is a scenic coastal farm park with incredible panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf and golden beaches along either side of a narrow peninsula. Park up and ease into the slow Kiwi lifestyle, swim, read a book on the beach, or go exploring.  

Shakespear Regional Park offers three beautiful nature walks, perfect for stretching your legs and enjoying New Zealand's native bush and peaceful farmland - the Heritage Trail, Lookout Track and the Tiri Tiri Track which gives you a fantastic view of Te Haruhi Bay.  

Shakespear Regional Park is situated just 40 minutes north of Auckland CBD.  

### Waiheke Island 

Escape to Waiheke Island for a day trip, or spend a few days relaxing in lush vineyards, olive groves and beaches.  
 

Once you've had your fill of world-class, locally-produced food and wine, it's time to hit the beach. The white sandy bays of Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi are wonderful for swimming and picnicking and offer easy access for kayaking in the sparkling Hauraki Gulf.  

Keen walkers can explore Waiheke’s trail, curving along cliff tops, down to tranquil beaches and through shady native bush. Journey to the eastern end of the island where the Stony Batter walkway meanders through World War II gun emplacements and underground tunnels.  

Waiheke Island is a 45-minute ferry ride from Auckland.

Finding a place to park your motorhome in Auckland is part of the adventure. There are several caravan parks and campgrounds in and around Auckland that offer facilities for motorhomes. Some popular options include:  

- Takapuna Beach Holiday Park - 30 30-minute drive from our Auckland Airport branch and 18 minutes from Auckland CBD  

- Tapapakanga Regional Park - 1-hour drive from our Auckland Airport branch  

- Shakespear Regional Park - 1-hour drive from our Auckland Airport branch  

- TOP10 Holiday Park - Over 40 holiday parks located across New Zealand 

Free camping is available in Auckland, however there are some prohibited and restricted areas. Freedom camping is also available on Waiheke Island, but some special rules apply. Please see the Auckland City Council free camping guidelines for information.
