Cairns enjoys a tropical climate and as a gateway to the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, and other natural wonders - it's a great starting point for your Australian road trip. 

The region's diverse landscapes provide endless options for adventure seekers, and those with a love of nature and the great outdoors. 

Stunning waterfalls, refreshing swimming spots, scenic hikes, and breathtaking natural beauty are found throughout Cairns and the surrounding region.

Our Cairns branch is conveniently located only 10 minutes from the airport, where our Star RV team will be ready to show you through your vehicle and help get you on the road.

Hire a motorhome in Cairns for the best way to explore

If you’re arriving at Carins airport, you can use our free shuttle to transfer you to our Cairns branch.

Just call us on [1800 875 018](tel1800875018) and select Cairns to request your shuttle ride. 

Our shuttle runs between 8:30am and 3:30pm.

#### Directions

For domestic and international terminals, exit the airport and follow the green line and signs to the courtesy coach pick up area and wait for your shuttle.

**Note:** Our friends at JUCY share their green and purple vans with us for a speedier shuttle service. So, if you see the JUCY van, hop on board for your free airport transfer service.

Airport shuttle

If you flew into Cairns, don’t forget you can get a free shuttle bus to our branch where you pick up your motorhome.

When you get to our branch we’ll spend time with you to get the paperwork completed, show you through the vehicle and provide you will all you need to get on the road as quickly as possible.

**Note:** pick up is during office hours only:

- You can collect your motorhome between the branch opening hours
and 30 minutes before the branch closing time.

Picking up your vehicle

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end but hopefully we’ll see you again soon!

Return your motorhome during business hours, ensuring you give yourself at least 45 minutes before closing to drop off your vehicle.

Before we say goodbye make sure that:

- The fuel tank is full
- Toilet is empty
- Grey water tank is empty
- Vehicle is clean and tidy
- Dishes are clean

If you’re making your way to the airport our last shuttle to the airport leaves at 3.30pm on weekdays, and 1.30pm on weekends. 

#### After hours drop-off

If you need to drop-off after hours, this will need prior approval from Star RV reservations and branch teams. After hours drop-off will incur a $40 additional fee. 

You will need to fill up with the correct fuel to the same level as when you picked up the vehicle and leave a fuel receipt at the branch.

Remove all your items from the vehicle and leave the vehicle tidy. Return the key to the key drop box located outside the branch.

**Note:** You will be fully responsible for any damage to the vehicles or parking fees incurred if dropping off after hours. The damage will not get covered under any excess reduction covers.

## Where to go in Cairns and Queensland 

Queensland is famous for its 7,000 kilometres of sparkling coastline, seemingly endless red Australian Outback, and ancient rainforests. The capital city of Brisbane boasts the surf beaches of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, while Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and wild rainforests of tropical North Queensland. 

Renting a motorhome in Cairns City is an excellent way to fully experience the diverse landscapes and attractions this tropical paradise has to offer. 

### Cairns and surrounding areas 

Once you've collected your motorhome in Cairns, you're ready to explore the vibrant city of Cairns and its surrounding areas at your own pace.  

You might like to start in the city centre and wander through the Royal Botanic Gardens or visit the iconic sights like the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay. 

If you're dreaming of sunny beaches and mesmerising coral reefs, Ellis Beach, Trinity Beach, and Kewarra Beach are all just a short drive away. 

### Great Barrier Reef 

When you're ready to set your sights further afield, the Great Barrier Reef calls. 

Appearing on almost every traveller's bucket list, here's your chance to explore the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life, with tropical fish, rays, turtles and even whales gliding through its colourful coral gardens and crystal-clear waters.  

There are so many ways to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkel, scuba or use a semi-submersible to explore underwater, or view it from above in a kayak, glass bottom boat, or from one of the many small islands. 

Cairns and Port Douglas offer visitors the fastest access to the best parts of the Great Barrier Reef for snorkelling and scuba diving.  

### Port Douglas 

One hour from Cairns, the laidback resort town of Port Douglas is a perfect base for exploring the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest and the outdoor playground of Cape Tribulation. 

The Port Douglas region is rich with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, and you can join rainforest tours and guided walks to learn about Aboriginal culture and their traditional hunting and fishing techniques. 

When you need some downtime from all your adventures, there are plenty of cafes and bars in the city centre and along a tree-lined beach. Pull up a chair, order a meal, and relax.  

Heading to Port Douglas will take you past Palm Cove, a chic seaside village full of colourful boutiques, award-winning spas, and coastal restaurants - there is no shortage of places to explore. 

### UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics 

A rainforest so big it makes up 0.12% of Australia's size, the Wet Tropics encompasses five precincts of tropical forest. Three of these are in the Cairns region: the Atherton Tablelands, Cairns & Central Coast, and the Northern Wet Tropics, home to the oldest rainforest in the world - the Daintree Rainforest. This world-renowned area offers stunning natural beauty with numerous walking trails through lush rainforests.  

Just 15 minutes north of Cairns city, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway glides over and then deep into the rainforest, giving you a truly unique perspective of this natural wonder.  

Further afield, you can find the serene walk to Mossman Gorge an hour's drive along the Captain Cook Highway from Cairns. Here you can cool off in freshwater swimming holes hidden in the rainforest, surrounded by huge boulders.  

To explore the world heritage Daintree Rainforest, you'll drive around 100 kilometres or 2.5 hours from Cairns. Step back in time with a walk through the ancient rainforest, take a river cruise, and keep an eye out for crocodiles, tropical birds and a variety of other wildlife.  

### Central Coast 

For those craving sunshine, sand, and the ocean, a 1.5-hour drive north to the Central Coast is a must. With pristine beaches and coastal walks, the region offers endless fun within reach. Dive into surfing at Terrigal and Avoca or unwind in Brisbane Water National Park, either way, you are in for a memorable escape. 

## Where to stay in your motorhome in Cairns 

Finding a place to park your motorhome in Cairns and across tropical North Queensland is part of the adventure. There are several caravan parks and camping grounds in and around Cairns that offer facilities for motorhomes, with powered and unpowered sites. Some popular options include: 

- NRMA Cairns Holiday Park - 7 minutes north of our Cairns depot. 

- Crystal Cascades Holiday Park - 26 minutes west of our Cairns depot. 

- Lake Placid Rainforest Retreat - 27 minutes south of our Cairns depot. 

- Babinda Boulders Rotary Park Free Camping Area - 46 minutes south of our Cairns depot. 

Free camping is only available in designated areas of Queensland, and you must be in a self-contained vehicle. There are many different free or cheap campsites from bushland to beach.
